Dramatic moment Japanese tourist who carjacked police truck to escape jail is caught in hotel
This is the dramatic moment a Japanese prisoner who carjacked a police truck to escape jail was caught in a hotel in Thailand.
Yuki Yanagi, 35, had commandeered the police vehicle while he was being transported back to an immigration prison following a court hearing in Bangkok on September 9.
He had feigned injury and was left alone in the truck while police retrieved a wheelchair, allowing him to take over and speed out of the compound.
Officials tracked down Yuki following the daring jail break, and he was caught on Monday, September 11, hiding in a hotel 90 miles away in Pattaya City, Chonburi province.
The fugitive was wanted by Japanese authorities for reportedly committing fraud involving state welfare funds during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He allegedly fled to Thailand, landing at the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok on May 17, 2022 on a visa that was valid until June 7.
He had been arrested for overstaying, and was detained at an immigration detention centre in Bangkok prior to his escape.
Authorities said Yuki is facing charges of overstaying, escaping while under detention, causing harm to an official, and property damage.
They said he will be deported for Japanese authorities to handle.
