An airport's automatic walkway chewed up a passenger's shoe amid anxiety over the devices following a horror travelator accident that ripped apart a woman's leg earlier this year.

Footage shows tourists removing the footwear that had become stuck on a travelator's sharp teeth at the arrival terminal of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport serving Bangkok, Thailand, on September 11.

Onlooker Namfon said people were alarmed when they heard the loud warning buzzer on the contraption.

She said: 'I was scared that there might be another amputation. Luckily, the man was safe, and only his shoe was caught.

'We were lucky that it was nothing serious. Other travellers should be careful and lift their feet properly when using travelators.'

The incident comes months after a female passenger, 57, needed her left leg amputated when a travelator surface plate collapsed and her limb was hacked apart by the machinery at the Don Mueang International Airport in the north of Bangkok on June 29.

Medics had to amputate her leg at the scene to free her and she was rushed to a hospital. She has since been released and is adapating to life with one leg.

Suvarnabhumi International Airport, nicknamed Swampy as it was built on swamps, is also owned by former state enterprise Airports Authority of Thailand (AOT).

Bloomberg ranked the company as the world's richest airport operator with a market cap of 31 billion USD in 2018. However, they have been criticised for a lack of reinvestment in infrastructure.
