Turtle hatchlings journey from eggs to sea captured by diver in Mexico

A diver in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, captured the journies of turtle hatchlings as they broke out of their eggs and crawled toward the sea.

The filmer told Newsflare: "The staff of the local conservation department assists the turtle by helping her dig a hole about half a metre deep and explaining to the human bystanders what is going on.

"The turtle returns to the beach where she was born to lay her eggs, after mating in the water. Once the eggs are in the hole, she covers the hole before going back to the sea thoroughly exhausted: it takes between one and two hours to complete this delicate operation.

"After about 60 days, the hatchlings emerge all together and scramble to the sea: not many of the roughly one to two hundred baby turtles will reach maturity due to the presence of many predators (crabs, birds, fishes).

"The warming climate has a potentially devastating influence as well, due to the fact that the sex of the newly-born turtle is determined by the temperature of the sand where the eggs are laid and incubated."
