An excavator was used to dig a trapped elephant out of a muddy well in Ramgarh, Jharkhand, on August 26.

Footage filmed by Nitish Kumar, a divisional forest officer, shows the 8-year-old mammal stuck in the stomach-deep water.

A rescue team used an excavator to dig a path for the elephant so it could climb out of the pit on its own.

The elephant successfully reunited with its herd in the afternoon.
