This is the dramatic moment a car flipped over on a road while trying to avoid a detached truck gear in Thailand.

Jirawan Apibansri, 52, was driving her black Honda City car along Sukhumvit Road in Trat province when she noticed the piece of machinery hurtling towards her on September 13.

The panicked driver tried to swerve to avoid it, causing her vehicle to cartwheel toward the roadside.

Police Major Ekkarat Papao, an inspector of the Mueang Trat Police Station, said officers received a report about the accident at 10:15 am.

They found Jirawan at the scene with minor injuries. Another motorist, an unnamed 45-year-old woman, had suffered wounds to her arms and was taken to the Trat Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi 10-wheeler truck and its driver Rakchai Hommaihai, 36, were next to the median lane waiting for police to arrive.

The truck was found with a broken axle and had leaked a trail of transmission fluid on the asphalt.

Rakchai, a delivery driver for local company Thaveephol Patthana Construction Co Ltd., said that he had been transporting sand when the gear fell off. He said: 'This truck was recently taken to an auto shop for pump repairs, so I didn't expect an accident like this to happen.'

Police Major Ekkarat added: 'We have taken photos as evidence and will be reviewing CCTV footage before proceeding with legal action.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
