Red Wattlebirds (Anthochaera carunculata) are large nectar-feeding Honeyeaters that are found across southern Australia. During the Spring breeding season, the adult Wattlebirds greatly increase the quantity of protein in their diet, hunting spiders and a variety of insects including Honeybees (Apis mellifera ) to feed their chicks. This Wattlebird was one of a pair that nested in a Jarrah tree (Eucalyptus marginata) that was conveniently located next to a hive of feral Honeybees in the nearest tree. The Wattlebirds perched above the beehive, then swooped down, caught a bee, removed its wings and sting before flying to their nest and feeding their young.
