The Taal Volcano in the Philippines belched thick gas this morning as authorities warned residents of hazardous volcanic smog.

Footage shows the haze, also called 'vog', clouding the volcano and reducing visibility in the vicinity in Batangas province on September 18.

State seismological agency PHIVOLCS said in an advisory on September 18 that the volcano released 3,264 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on September 15.

Steam plumes reached up to 2,200 metres high, while four volcanic tremors were recorded in a 24-hour period.

PHIVOLCS said in a statement: 'As a reminder, vog consists of fine droplets containing volcanic gas such as SO2 which is acidic and can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract.'

Residents with respiratory and heart illnesses were advised to stay indoors and wear mask when going out.

Taal Volcano is still under a level 1 alert, meaning there is 'low-level activity' observed.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
