A stargazer was left delighted after he captured a meteor soaring across the sky during an aurora display in Iceland.

Footage from September 12 shows the fireball leaving a trail in the sky above Stöðvarfjörður.

The filmer said: "I was hunting northern lights in Iceland again and was in the east fjords, shooting timelapse video of the skies with faint northern lights when suddenly an extremely bright meteor illuminated the sky and left a long-lasting persistent trail.

"I did not film the actual event but one of my cameras shooting a timelapse caught the sudden brightening of the skies and then I turned around and immediately shot video of the persistent train which was very bright.

"We saw the northern lights six nights out of seven, three of those were really stunning.

"Seeing northern lights is a pure luck event for many people, and then you can go beyond luck and actually understand the science behind it and see them almost any night, guaranteed, especially in the equinox months of September, October, March, and April.

"This fireball bolide meteor was a real stunner, it illuminated the sky and landscape for a second and there was a very bright and long-lasting persistent train afterwards."
