Devotees marked the birth of the Hindu idol Ganesha at a shrine in Bangkok, Thailand, today.

Footage shows worshippers giving offerings at a sculpture of the deity in the Huai Khwang area of the capital city on September 19.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival commemorating the birth of the Ganesha. It takes place annually from September 19 to September 28.

At the shrine, devotees engage in prayer and offer various items as offerings to the Ganesha statue. These offerings include fruits, milk, honey, modaka, laddu, Bermuda grass, nine types of grains, flowers, and water.

Hinduism was the religion of the mighty Khmer empire which stretched across much of what is now modern-day Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos.

The religion was introduced into Southeast Asia by Indian traders from the sub-continent who worked with the Khmers. While the Khmer empire converted to Buddhism in the 12th century, Hindu belief systems are still present in the countries and the symbolism is present in the ancient stone monuments found across the region.
