Dr Simon Walsh, a consultant in emergency medicine and deputy chairman of the BMA’s consultants committee, said Tuesday’s strike “could have been avoided” if the Government had been “willing to come and talk to us”.
He told: “We’ve been very clear that the reason that we’ve been pushed to industrial action is, despite months of trying to get negotiations with the Government going, they’ve failed to acknowledge and address the serial erosion of pay which they’ve overseen over the last 15 years, meaning consultants’ pay is now 35% less than it was 15 years ago.
