Dozens of fireworks stored in a warehouse exploded damaging homes and vehicles in Thailand.

The explosives were being kept in a resident's shed to be used for festivities when they erupted, sparking a large fire that engulfed appliances and cars in Ang Thong province on September 19.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Tharakorn Sakulpiyathewan, inspector at the Muang Ang Thong Police Station, said officers received a report at 5:00 pm, and coordinated with rescue volunteers and the Saladaeng Subdistrict fire department to put out the flames.

Firefighters extinguished the fire after an hour with no serious injuries or casualties reported.

Benjarat Yaemwajee, 49, owner of the one-storey home, said she had bought around 50 pieces of fireworks from Pathum Thani province to be used at an event in Ayutthaya province on September 20. She said there were six people in the house when the explosion occurred, but none of them were injured.

Benjarat's neighbour, Charan Nanthakorn, 59, who lived around 30 metres away, said he and his wife Sumalee Nanthakorn, 57, were jolted by the loud blast. Sumalee was reported to have fainted from shock, and was taken to the Ang Thong Hospital for treatment.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Tharakorn said: 'We have inspected the scene and interviewed the residents in the area. We are now investigating what exactly caused the explosion.'

The incident follows another blast that occurred in the southern province of Narathiwat in July.

At least 12 people - including two children - were killed and more than 100 injured when an explosion tore through a fireworks warehouse in Sungai Kolok town.

More than 200 households in a 500-metre radius of the warehouse were affected. Authorities believe the explosion was caused by welding sparks, which had likely ignited the fireworks in the under-construction building.
