Huge wild elephant visits Buddhist temple
A huge wild elephant visited a temple during a Buddhist holiday in Thailand.
The jumbo Plai Krae was seen trundling toward the Wat Pa Khao Yai in Nakhon Ratchasima province during religious festivities on Asalha Puja day on August 1.
Villagers said the animal, which lives in the nearby Khao Yai National Park, was a familiar sight as it usually visits and stays in the community area during the annual Buddhist three-month retreat.
They said the elephant was docile, except when it would stomp its feet to drive away aggressive stray dogs.
As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
