Birmingham Medical Students show how Freshers Week is done safely with legendary annual fancy dress bar crawl
Students, all studying medical degrees at the University of Birmingham, put on their best fancy dress and hit the town on Thursday (21 September) night during Freshers Week.
The 1,500 strong group of academics, part of the university Medical Society, graced Birmingham’s infamous Broad Street and managed to keep themselves in-check without a medical emergency in sight in stark contrast to other students on nights out earlier in the week.
The young hopefuls had the opportunity to wear whatever they wanted as there is no theme at the annual event named ‘The Hop’ which has been running (or hopping) for 24 years and is held for the country's future doctors, nurses and other medical professional students with some taking courses of six-years, double a normal degree length.
First years wore branded T-Shirts whilst older years showed off their homemade outfit skills.
Outfits this year included: Plenty of Barbie and Ken’s, Ladies in shower cubicles, Magic Mushrooms, Heinz tins of food, Trolls with impressive spiked hairstyles, Jedward, a group of Megamind super-villain’s, a Selection of table condiments, Grapes, Monsters Inc Mike and Sully’s, M&S’ Percy Pigs, Starbucks drinks, Rubber Ducks, a pack of Uno cards, Celebration chocolates, even a bunch of broccoli!
The event also sells a drink called 'Heidi', which was originally made by a Birmingham medical student in honour of the fancy dress event who is now a successful GP in Stourbridge.
The drink consists of two shots of Archers, two of Smirnoff and one of Malibu all in a pint glass and topped up with orange or cranberry juice and lemonade.
The drink has been described as "Delicious and fairly lethal"
The revellers started Heidi’s Bier Bar then moved to the superclub PRYZM where huge and colourful queues formed to get inside and party the night away.
The students kept themselves in check without putting further pressure on the NHS with no worse-for-wear casualties.
