Al-Mutanabi Street and the adjacent al-Sarai market in downtown Baghdad are crowded with shoppers at this time of year as the new school year, which will start on Oct. 1, approaches.

People prefer shopping for school supplies at the old stationery markets in downtown Baghdad due to the availability of a wide range of products at competitive prices.

"Preparing my children for the new school year means a lot to me as a father because I want them to succeed in their studies," Imad Salih, 35, who took his children to buy stationery in al-Mutanabi Street, told Xinhua.
