STORYLINE:
Chinese companies in Uganda have created job opportunities and empowered young talents in the east African country's emerging oil industry.
The Kingfisher oil field run by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), is located in Kikuube district in the Western Region of Uganda.
Young Ugandans working here are taking on tasks, acquiring skills and knowledge from Chinese experts.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English) KIRUNDA ANDREW, Drilling engineer, CNOOC
"In regards to drilling, everything that I currently know about drilling, I have learned it from the Chinese. Because I joined CNOOC without not too much experience in drilling, especially in oil and gas. But due to the constant interaction with their equipment and operations that we do here, I have been in position to learn quite a good deal. So I believe they have greatly impacted on my knowledge when it comes to drilling operations."
Uganda Petroleum Institute (UPIK) is the premier oil and gas training institute in the region.
CNOOC has partnered with the institute in training and equipping Ugandans with skills that will allow them not only work in the oil and gas sector but also to be qualified for other high-level engineering jobs.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): OSCAR MUHUNZA, Lecturer, Uganda Petroleum Institute
"We have done several trainings for CNOOC. We have trained more than 100 welders for CNOOC."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): UKUI IVAN, Student, Uganda Petroleum Institute
"When I came here I realized what I studied in class. Immediately after our classes, the next sessions are for workshops. All the workshops you have seen around here, we actually visit them on a weekly basis, so that we can apply what we study here. And by the time we go to the field, it's actually not so difficult for us to apply and learn more from the field."
