An e-bike rider tried to run a red light but slammed on his brakes when a lorry hurtled past in front of him.

Dashcam footage shows the bungling motorist ignoring traffic laws and failing to stop at the junction in Shanghai, China, on August 14.

However, the rider rushed to pull the brakes and even used his foot to skid and slow the vehicle down as the red truck quickly approached.

The man was able to stop on time but was shaken, leaving one of his containers behind, hurriedly trying to reach home.

E-bikes have surged in popularity in China in recent years. In 2022, more than 50 million e-bikes were sold, accounting for over 90 per cent of the global e-bike market. There are now estimated to be over 350 million e-bikes in China, which is more than one for every five people.

However, there are safety concerns over traffic accidents, battery safety, lack of regulation and the inexperience of some riders - like the man seen in the video.
