This is the dramatic moment a woman stranded on a bridge pier was rescued as flash floods surged during a monsoon storm in the Philippines.

Docelyn Amasig said she had fallen asleep under the bridge when the Lipadas River in Davao City, Davao del Sur province, suddenly swelled leaving her trapped on September 16.

Passers-by who saw the trapped woman came to her aid, tossing a rope which they used to pull her toward the embankment.

Dramatic footage shows Docelyn - the rope tied around her body - plunging into the churning current as residents dragged her to safety. Worried locals cheered as she emerged from the muddy torrents unharmed.

Local officials said they had previously warned people not to loiter under the bridge. They said they will implement stricter security measures to prevent a similar incident from happening.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
