Shocking scenes unfolded after Ajax trailed their rival Feyenoord 3-0 seeing furious fans attempt to break into their own stadium, the Johan Cruyff Arena on September 24.

Footage shows a group of fans breaking their way into the stadium after flares and fireworks were thrown onto the pitch.

The game was abandoned 58 minutes in.

The filmer told Newsflare: "The game was suspended at one stage as missiles rained down from the stands, making it impossible for the match to continue due to the threat posed to player safety. It was decided to continue after a brief delay, but a second suspension was required as flares continued to land on the playing surface."

Dutch legend Marco van Basten commented on the unsavoury scenes: "This is the worst scenario possible. I honestly say we should just quit professional football in the Netherlands. Shut it down. It's completely deliberate and I have no idea why. Did they think this would change the outcome of the match?

"If we cannot find a solution, then we just stop playing football. Just say it is not possible because of these people. I can't get my head around these idiots. We were all supposed to be happy when Covid was finished and we got full stadiums back again, but then this happens. We all knew something like this would happen. It was deliberate. Just stop football."

Ajax's match against rivals Feyenoord on Sunday was abandoned in the 56th minute after home supporters threw flares and fireworks onto the pitch.

Visitors Feyenoord led 3-0 at the Johan Cruyff Arena when the game was called off, having already been paused twice.
