Hosted by the historic Pickwick Bicycle Club, the British Penny Farthing Championships took place in London on September 24.

These iconic bicycles were the pioneers of mass cycling nearly 150 years ago but are very distinctive with their fixed wheels and no gears.

With 20 participants, the race lasted 30 minutes, plus two laps. Charlie Burrell, UK, and Belgium's Evi Dumon emerged victorious in the men's and women's categories, respectively, using strategic slipstreaming to secure their wins.

This was the second British Championship, doubling last year's entries, and showcasing the sport's modern resurgence.

Riding a penny farthing, towering at 2 and a half metres, is a unique challenge. Uphill climbs demand effort, descents and corners require skill; falls from such heights can spell disaster.

Yet, these dedicated riders embrace the thrill, preserving the legacy of this timeless mode of transport.
