Bungling weightlifter drops barbell on fellow gym user in China
A gymgoer suffered a broken foot when it was crushed under a 140-lbs barbell that another sportsman accidentally dropped on him while working out nearby.
CCTV footage captured the accident at a fitness centre in Shanghai, China, on the evening of September 21.
A man dressed in a blue T-shirt appeared to be attempting a weightlift but lost his balance almost as soon as he tried to stand upright.
As he fell to the floor, the right-side barbell hit another gymgoer on the foot.
The victim, surnamed Zhang, collapsed and curled up in pain. He held his right foot with his hands while others rushed over to check on him as he was seemingly unable to get up.
The injured Zhang later told local media that he was in shock then and experienced intense pain that forced him to fall to the ground.
Both men were later taken to a local hospital.
Zhang said: 'I think he [the man who dropped the weights] suddenly twisted his foot, lost balance, and the falling barbell weighed around 140 lbs.
'It resulted in a fracture in my right foot, and I immediately laid down in pain.
'I will need to recover for three months.'
Zhang added that the gym manager has already reported the incident to the company, and further actions will depend on the response from higher-ups.
He emphasized the importance of safety precautions during workouts and urged everyone to be cautious.
