A Belarusian cargo plane overshot the runway and exploded at an airport in Mali on Saturday.

The Rubystar Airways-operated Ilyushin IL-76 aircraft, registered EW-412TH in Belarus, had just arrived from Minsk when it crashed at the Gao International Airport on September 23.

Dramatic footage shows how the Soviet-era plane had landed on the tarmac, but kept moving at high speed off the end of the runway. It then collapsed into parts and erupted in a huge blast with dark smoke billowing from the site.

The total losses and number of casualties were still unclear. Its flight to Istanbul, Turkey, scheduled for later the same day was cancelled.

The Ilyushin IL-76 is a multi-purpose, four-engine plane designed by the Soviet Union as a freighter to transport heavy cargo to remote areas. It has been used in various aplications such as evacuations, disaster aid delivery, and emergency response.
