STORYLINE:

Scholars from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan on Tuesday discussed how to promote cross-Strait integrated development in new era, in an academic event held at Xiamen University in east China's Fujian Province.

China will make Fujian Province a demonstration zone for the integrated development across the Taiwan Strait, according to a circular released earlier this month.

The circular was jointly issued by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council.

The move is aimed at deepening the cross-Strait integrated development in all fields and advancing the peaceful reunification of the motherland.

"We are willing to take the initiative to share the opportunities for mainland development with our fellow compatriots in Taiwan. This is a very positive and wonderful thing. I am very satisfied and happy with this. I believe it's like a chain of emotions, where the elders are kind, and siblings are friendly, but no matter what, you still need to have a heart of gratitude.

"In the process of promoting cross-Strait integration, we have already achieved a considerable degree of success. However, we hope that these achievements will be even better. Therefore, within these 21 measures (specified in the circular), we can see a more concrete approach towards our fellow Taiwanese compatriots in areas such as investment, employment, education, and exchange. Because for our Taiwanese compatriots, besides having greater development opportunities on the mainland, we also hope that our mainland compatriots can bring more vitality to Taiwan. When both sides of the Strait can blend together, true cross-Strait integrated development can be achieved, which will pave the way for a better future together.
