STORYLINE:

The construction of the Central Waste Water Treatment Plant funded by China is now in full swing in Mongolia's capital.

This project covering an area of 178,000 square meters in the Songinokhairkhan District of Ulan Bator is a landmark project under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative and pragmatic cooperation between China and Mongolia.

"So far, the completion rate of the main structure has reached 82 percent, and the equipment has been basically completed at the Chinese factory and has begun to be shipped to the site in an orderly manner," according to Zhang Jiawei, a chief engineer of the executor of the project, China Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group, on Wednesday.

The groundbreaking ceremony of the China-aided waste water treatment plant was held in early 2019, but due to the pandemic, the construction work had been delayed for almost three years until the spring of this year.

The existing waste water processing plant built in 1964 in Ulan Bator, which is home to over half of the country's 3.4 million population, does not have a system of processing silt and waste silt, and heavy metals are dried up outside causing air pollution.

It is said that once completed, the waste water treatment plant will play an important role in improving the urban ecological environment and improving people's quality of life.

The waste water treatment plant to be completed in 2025 will have the capacity to purify 250,000 cubic meters of waste water a day, 1.6 times that of the existing sewage treatment plant.
