Blazing Through the Streets: The Mesmerizing Fire Dragon Dance returns to Hong Kong's streets
The streets of Hong Kong's Tai Hang district ignite with color and smoke during the spectacular Fire Dragon Dance which made a spectacular return after three years of suspension due to COVID restrictions. In this popular tradition dating back over 100 years, a giant dragon structure made of straw and covered in incense sticks is hoisted and twisted through the streets by a team of athletic dancers. As the incense burns, the dragon appears to breathe bursts of fire.
The custom began in the late 19th century, when a village was plagued by a deadly outbreak of cholera. The villagers crafted the fire dragon and performed the dance ritual to rid the area of disease and misfortune. The effort was seen as a success, and the dance has been reproduced every year since then as a celebration of the community's health and good luck.
