Clementina XXI is already in a refrigerated room in the National Meteorological Service (SMN) building. It is the most powerful computer for the public science and technology sector in Latin America and number 82 in the world, according to Daniel Filmus, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Nation, who was present today at the presentation of this computer. novelty whose computing capacity is equivalent to 15,000 cell phones working at the same time and with the same objective.

The name of the supercomputer is inspired by “Clementina XXI”, the first computer for scientific use that was installed in the country in 1960, under the management of the scientist and mathematician Manuel Sadosky. Although the “supercomputer” is installed in the SMN building, this immense computing capacity will be available to 21 public institutions that are dedicated to scientific research.

Celeste Saulo, current director of the SMN and who will soon be the secretary general of the World Meteorological Organization, describes that Clementina's functionalities “have no limits.”

“This computer returns to the idea of the first Clementina XXI, which was to train human resources and accompany them with a computing system that would allow Argentine science to make important advances. This computing capacity can be applied to materials physics, molecular biology, nanotechnology, astrophysics, meteorology, or any discipline that needs to make models to solve, simulate and experiment with possible states,” says Saulo.

For those in the know, Clementina XXI will have a capacity of 15.4 petaFLOPS, each petaFLOP being equal to 1000 teraFLOPS. Each teraFLOP has the capacity to do one trillion calculations per second. This represents a significant advance compared to the computers that the SMN currently has. The most powerful so far is called Huayra Muyu and has about 340 TeraFLOPS.
