The Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna, Austria, celebrated a historic moment with the hatching of two adorable king penguin twin chicks, seen exploring the Polarium enclosure on September 24, 2023. This marks the first-ever occurrence of twin king penguin chicks in the zoo's history since acquiring these penguins in 1976.

Zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck expressed excitement over this rare feat, emphasizing that breeding king penguins successfully in zoos is a noteworthy achievement. The two chicks hatched over the summer, on July 23 and August 5, and have been thriving under the care of their parents. They currently feed on pre-digested fish and are expected to molt around ten months of age, growing their first waterproof feathers and learning to swim.

King penguins are the world's second-largest penguin species and are primarily found on islands around Antarctica. They hold a "least concern" status on the IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species.
