STORYLINE:

Indian Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday held a meeting to direct states to implement prevention and management measures against spiking dengue cases.

During the meeting, Mandaviya was briefed on the nationwide dengue situation.

Officials said the government has trained health workers and provided all necessary support to the states for screening, fogging and information, education and communication activities.

According to the National Center for Vector Borne Disease Control, India has recorded about 94,200 dengue cases and over 90 related deaths so far this year.

However, the center has not included the figures from West Bengal this year, which has reportedly recorded 38,000 dengue cases.

Last year, 233,251 dengue cases and 303 related deaths were recorded in India, the official data showed.

The mosquito-borne viral disease causes fever, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and, in severe cases, internal bleeding or a fatal drop in blood pressure.
