STORYLINE:
Armed militants withdrew on Friday from the eight schools of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) at Ain Al-Helweh camp in southern Lebanon, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.
According to the NNA, a joint Palestinian security force was there to supervise the withdrawal.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): MAHMOUD AJOURI, Head of joint security force
"I believe that this step is positive and we can build on this positivity for the next phase. I tell our people that things are getting better. When they see the removal of the barricades, they will feel more secure and safer, whether for our people inside the camp or in the surrounding areas.
The next step is for our people to return to their normal life in the camp and the normalization of life in the city of Sidon and inside the camp."
The move came as part of a cease-fire adopted earlier this month after the latest wave of violence between members of the Palestinian Fatah movement and Islamic activists in the camp.
The conflict has claimed about 20 lives and injured more than 150 since September 7.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): HAITHAM AL SHAABI, Islamists leader at Ain Al-Helweh
"There might be landmines left in UNRWA schools but the agency will send experts to remove them. The evacuation is complete and our brothers in the Joint Security Force and the factions informed us that the Palestinian Liberation Organization militants retreated and we are doing the same. The rumors about the existence of tunnels being dug in the schools are not true. You are here and you can see by yourself."
This practical step would motivate the hundreds of families, who have been displaced by the clashes, to go back to the camp, said the report.
It added that UNRWA will work on rehabilitating the camp's schools, which were damaged by the clashes, to allow thousands of students to enroll in the new academic year.
