This is the moment an elephant calf trampled over a steel garden fence in the middle of the night.

The baby jumbo had wandered into the grounds of the Prasae Water Transmission and Maintenance Project in Rayong, Thailand, on September 21.

Footage shows the juvenile pachyderm being followed by a pack of dogs as it roamed the property trying to find a way out. It then tramped on a section of the fence and walked away.

Sumeth Muadmanee, an engineer at the project, said a security guard had woken him up to inform him of the incident. He warned residents to be careful as the wild animal appeared to be headed toward residential areas.

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
