A new terminal has been opened at an airport in Bangkok amid a push for more Chinese tourists in Thailand.

Authorities held the opening for the new SAT-1 terminal at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport on September 28, with local press receiving a preview of its facilities on September 25.

The terminal is expected to boost annual passenger capacity from 45 million to 60 million.

During the first phase, it will be used by airlines Thai AirAsia X and Thai Vietjet Air. More companies will be able to utilise the terminal in subsequent phases.

Duty-free restaurants and shops have also been partially opened at the terminal.

The move comes as Thai officials waived visa requirements for Chinese nationals to revive the ailing tourism industry in Thailand.

Chinese and Kazakh holidaymakers can enter and stay in the country for 30 days without a visa. The measures started on September 25 and run until February 29, 2024.
