More than 1,000 people have died from dengue in Bangladesh since the beginning of the year, according to official figures, the worst epidemic of this disease in the country's history.

In detail, 1,006 people have died since the beginning of the year, among 200,000 confirmed cases, according to the Ministry of Health of the eighth most populous country in the world.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has deployed experts on the ground and is helping authorities to strengthen surveillance, increase laboratory capacity and improve communication with affected communities, it said at the beginning of the month.

The former director of the Bangladeshi Health Services, Be-Nazir Ahmed, assured that the number of deaths is higher than in all previous years combined since 2000.
