This stunning fire rainbow resembled a giant golden bowl - captivating locals who deemed it a sign of good luck and fortune.

The beautiful sunset was captured just above the region of Xishuangbanna, in south-western China's Yunnan Province, on October 2.

At first glance, the video seems to show an ordinary twilight settling among the residential area. But, as the cameraperson zooms in, it then reveals a stunning pair of clouds that seem like an inverted mushroom cap, with an orange cap and a reddish underside, peeking through a darkening sky.

The filmer said: 'I've been in Yunnan for ten years. The first time I looked up, my heart was overwhelmed by its beauty.'

A fire rainbow, also known as a circumhorizontal arc, is a rare optical phenomenon that appears as a horizontal band of rainbow colors in the sky. It is caused by the refraction of sunlight through hexagonal ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus clouds. Fire rainbows are typically seen when the sun is high in the sky, at an altitude of at least 58 degrees.
