STORYLINE:
Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council and General Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan on Tuesday received a proposed initiative by a Sudanese national group to stop the war and form an emergency government.
Al-Burhan received the initiative when he met in Port Sudan, the capital city of the Red Sea State in eastern Sudan, with a delegation of the National Mechanism for Supporting Civil Democratic Transition in Sudan, a political group established in 2021 and led by former member of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council Aisha Musa, the sovereign council said in a statement.
"The meeting reviewed the mechanism's efforts to create a national consensus that would lead to stopping the war and forming a temporary transitional authority," Adel al-Mufti, rapporteur of the mechanism, was quoted in the statement as saying.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): ADEL AL-MUFTI, Rapporteur of the National Mechanism for Supporting Civil Democratic Transition in Sudan
"The most important outcomes of the national mechanism and the roadmap, which handed to the chairman of the sovereign council, include stopping the war first and then forming a temporarily emergency government to implement some internal commitments in Sudan."
He said that the proposed roadmap calls for stopping the war, forming an emergency government to carry out the national obligations in development and urbanization, providing relief for the war-affected citizens, and opening humanitarian passages to ensure that aid can reach Khartoum and Darfur states.
To help end the war and lead to an inclusive dialogue among all Sudanese political forces, the mechanism will hold meetings with political blocs, civil society organizations, religious sects, and resistance committees to agree on forming an emergency government or establishing a national civil front.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): AISHA MUSA, Chairperson of the National Mechanism for Supporting Civil Democratic Transition in Sudan
"We will meet with all parties capable of stopping this heinous war, which nothing has ever been like in the Sudanese history."
Sudan has been witnessing deadly clashes between the SAF and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in Khartoum and other areas since April 15, resulting in at least 3,000 deaths and more than 6,000 injuries, according to figures released by the Sudanese Health Ministry.
According to the latest report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), some 5.3 million people have been displaced inside and outside Sudan.
Over one million people have crossed into neighboring countries, including the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan, OCHA said.
