This is the dramatic moment trees fell onto an oncoming car as a landslide crashed onto a mountain road in Thailand.

Motorist Kardnat Kingketboonyiam was travelling with his family when rocks tumbled down the steep hillside along the Doi Luang Chiang Dao mountain in Chiang Mai province during a storm on October 1.

Footage shows the passengers screaming as the uprooted trees plunged onto the front of the car.

Kardnat said they were making their way up the sloped and winding path when several bamboo trees on the roadside were knocked down by the sudden landslide.

He said: 'Throughout the journey I sat on the front seat, filming the route periodically. When we arrived at the scene, I noticed the bamboo trees were falling so I told our female driver to be careful.

'Suddenly, the trees slid and fell onto the road. There were four women, two men, and one girl inside the car. All of us were screaming and terrified. After that, we all got out of the car to check the damage.'

The tourists had to wait for authorities to clear the trees, soil and rocks obstructing the mountain road.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.

Landslides on mountain roads can be caused by heavy rainfall that saturates the soil, making rocks, trees and chunks of oil more likely to slide down.

Steep slopes, a lack of vegetation to hold boulders in place, weak or fractured rocks and poor hillside drainage can all contribute to the risks - which are hard for local authorities to mitigate against.
