Dozens of passengers were seen trying to squeeze onto an already packed train as millions travelled across China during the country's Golden Week holidays.

Footage captured on October 6 in Suzhou, Anhui Province, shows railway staff instructing passengers to step back to allow the crowded train to depart.

The station's staff explained that due to a surge in travellers, many passengers could not get tickets to their destinations.

The station was arranged for stranded passengers to take other trains to their destinations.

The Ministry of Transport said the country’s railways, roads, waterways and planes were expected to carry 53.4 million passengers on Monday, up 56.4 per cent on the fourth day of the holiday last year.
