A stray cat impaled on a rusty fence spike was rescued by villagers in Thailand.

The feline had been wandering the neighbourhood but was stabbed by the sharp metal object used to keep thieves out of an apartment in Ang Thong province on October 4.

The landlord and residents who head the hapless female moggie wailing called volunteers, fearing it might die from its wounds.

Footage shows the rescue crew using power tools to saw off the metal stake as they covered the cat with a towel to keep it from wriggling. After 10 minutes, they managed to free the injured stray and took her to the vet for a check-up.

The doctor said the cat has received medication and is now in a stable condition.
