A woman's romantic surprise for her boyfriend's birthday went awry after a balloon carrying 1,800 yuan (250USD) flew off into the sky.

Footage from October 5 captured in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, shows the moment the woman went to retrieve the gift from her car.

Unexpectedly, the balloon, that read "I love you", then floats away out of the reach of the girlfriend.

As the balloon was too big and the car's trunk could not be closed, the woman wished to move it. During this action, the gift floated away into the sky.

According to the woman's boyfriend Mr Zhang, 18 hundred yuan bills were attached to the balloon.
