Relatives of those killed in the Thai nursery massacre have mourned the victims one year on from the mass shooting.

The Buddhist ceremony took place today at the daycare center run by the Uthai Sawan district council in Nong Bua Lamphu province, northern Thailand.

One year ago to the day, former policeman Panya Khamrab, 34, killed 36 people and injured 10 others in a rampage with guns, knives, and his car. He later turned a gun on himself during the drug-fuelled killing spree.

The first anniversary remembrance event - just days after a shopping mall shooting that killed two and injured five in the capital Bangkok - was presided over by provincial governor Suwit Chanhuan.

During the event, 12 Buddhist monks performed religious chants and prayed for the children who lost their lives.

Tookata, whose daughter Plaifon was killed, said that she was still in a 'state of deep grief'.

She said: 'Tears will always well up in my eyes whenever someone mentions the incident. My family have been praying for my daughter every day since.'

Teacher Miss Mos, who lost her husband and her son in the incident, said that she is only just starting to feel better following a year of turmoil.

She said: 'I think about what happened every day. It is only just starting to become easier.'

Lessons for 71 current youngsters are being carried out in a temporary building while officials wait for the scene of the murder to be demolished.

Danaichoke Boonsom, the chief executive of the Uthai Sawan Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, mentioned that the original building where the incident occurred has not yet been renovated.

However, the budget for constructing the new building has been allocated, and a contractor has been selected. Construction is expected to commence soon.
