The president of the AFA, Claudio Tapia, together with the ministers of Economy, Sergio Massa, and of Tourism and Sports, Matias Lammens, this Thursday officially presented Argentina as the host of the 2030 Centennial World Cup "at zero cost" and "in democracy ".

In a joint press conference at the Lionel Andres Messi facility in Ezeiza, Tapia remarked that Argentina will receive one of the three opening matches without any expense and stressed that it will be "the World Cup of democracy."

SOUNDBITE (SPANISH): Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA):
"Having the possibility of having managed to christize, I think, a dream that began a while ago so that the 2030 World Cup would have the possibility of being played in South America. I think that Argentina has been one of the most visited countries by the president of world football, by President Infantino, and the leaders who were on the last visit to our country know what I am talking about. He promised that Argentina would be one of the hosts of the 2030 World Cup and he fulfilled (...). The AFA had that possibility because The Minister (Sergio Massa) accompanied us, because administratively he moved very quickly (...) that reflects that in 2030 the Argentines will have the start and the inauguration of a World Cup that is so significant for football, historic, zero cost. We Argentines are going to to host the 2030 World Cup where the State will not have to invest anything. It was very difficult to compete economically and above all things in the votes, there are many who vote for a country to host a World Cup and in South America there are only 10 of us, but we can see that we are worth a lot (…) This World Cup has a patriotic value for Argentines, this is not a World Cup of dictatorship, whoever governs governs, it is a World Cup of democracy."

SOUNDBITE (SPANISH): Sergio Massa, Minister of Economy of Argentina:
"Where you took Argentine football: congratulations. But above all, congratulations to Argentine football for perhaps becoming the highest flag that we can wave throughout the world and tell them that, in the face of those who say that We are a shit country and from within they constantly say that we are a shit country, this is the demonstration that in front of the world we are not a shit country and in the things that we stand out we can shine and we can occupy a place of preponderance (…) I want to ask that we also put a federal perspective on it, I know that some people from Buenos Aires are going to get angry, I would love for us to do that national team match in Santiago, in Cordoba or in Mendoza."
