STORYLINE:

The Cairo-based Arab Parliament (AP), affiliated with the Arab League, on Friday strongly condemned the European Parliament's recent statement on the human rights statues in Egypt ahead of the awaiting presidential election.

In a statement, the AP voiced "full opposition of all forms of interference by the European Parliament in the internal affairs of Arab countries." It said interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries represents a blatant violation of the principles of the United Nations and all international norms and laws.

On Wednesday, the European Parliament underlined the importance of holding "credible, free, and fair elections," urging the Egyptian authorities to stop harassing opposition figures.

"Egypt has integral elections and old judicial and constitutional institutions that apply laws and provide all necessary guarantees to hold free and fair presidential elections," the AP added.

Egypt will hold a presidential vote on Dec. 10-12.
