A Ghanaian lawmaker has said the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has gradually propelled Africa toward industrialization.
Kofi Adams, a member of parliament (MP) in the Oti Region of Ghana, said China initiated the BRI to support trading and economic development.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): KOFI ADAMS, Member of Parliament (MP) in the Oti Region of Ghana
"Despite the presence of all other means of movement for them, there's aviation, there's the sea, all that they could use. They must initiate the Belt and Road Initiative to still even reach out and make it easier for everybody to also move."
The MP said that through the BRI, African countries have started developing critical infrastructure, such as railways, harbors and airports.
He added that China is also investing in the energy sector to support industrialization.
The MP cited the example of Ghana, where China has invested in the Bui hydropower dam, the second-largest hydro dam in the country, and some solar energy projects.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): KOFI ADAMS, Member of Parliament (MP) in the Oti Region of Ghana
"Today, we've had some level of stability in terms of energy because of just that single investment. But we all know what energy does to industrialization, and so how many countries may be willing to give you that much to invest into such an area."
For many African countries, the MP said their industrialization agenda would not have taken off without the support of China.
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): KOFI ADAMS, Member of Parliament (MP) in the Oti Region of Ghana
"Go to Ethiopia, you will find their (China's) presence in terms of rail development, aviation, and ports. You go to Kenya, you will find the same. You go to Angola, you go to many of these countries, you will find their presence in terms of activities that they have keenly supported towards the industrialization drive."
