Volcanic smog triggered class suspensions as the Taal Volcano spewed gas in the Philippines this morning.

Video shows the toxic fumes hanging over the volcano island while haze shrouded the surrounding lake in Batangas province on Monday, October 9.

Authorities have cancelled in-person classes in nine nearby towns due to the smog.

In an advisory on Monday, October 9, state seismological agency PHIVOLCS said there were no volcanic earthquakes recorded, while an average of 2,887 tonnes per day of sulfur dioxide - a toxic air pollutant - was last measured on October 6.

The volcano had also emitted voluminous gas plumes up to 2,400 metres tall, the agency said.

PHIVOLCS director Teresito Bacolcol said the smog has begun to disperse on Monday due to strong winds blowing through the area.

However, residents were warned to continue wearing face masks and staying indoors.

Taal Volcano is still on Alert Level 1, indicating low-level unrest.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
