Heavy rainfall hit the Bago Region of southern Myanmar last Sunday, displacing thousands and disrupting rail traffic, local authorities said on Monday.

U Thaung Shwe, director of Bago Region's Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, told Xinhua on Monday that a total of 14,304 people were taking shelter in 36 relief camps because of the floods.

Rescue operations were underway as the water level continued to rise, he said.

Nearly 800 passengers from the two passenger trains en route to Yangon were transported with vessels to Yangon on Sunday evening due to the floods, the country's Ministry of Transport and Communications reported.

The trips of four passenger trains that ran through Bago township on Sunday were also cancelled due to the floods, it said.

The rail trips running through Bago Region remained suspended on Monday, a railway official said.

The water level of the Bago River in Bago was over 4 feet above its danger level on Monday, the country's Department of Meteorology and Hydrology reported.
