This is the dramatic moment a tourist swimming on a dam spillway was swept away by flash floods in the Philippines.

The man had taken a dip in the water near the top of the structure, but did not anticipate the force of the currents and was washed away into a river in Bansalan town, Davao del Sur province, on October 7.

Footage shows the man sliding down the slippery slope and landing in the churning waters below. He tried to make his way to the river banks, but was knocked down by the torrent. Luckily, he managed to reach a calmer section of the stream and was able to swim toward the concrete embankment.

The flash flood was seen surging more violently after the tourist had pulled himself out of the river.

Onlooker Cherry May Tripoli said: 'Whoever it was almost drowned when he slid down the dam. I was shaking watching him struggle in the water. Thank God he managed to get out alive.'

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
