Hungry elephant holds up cars to check them for food
A hungry elephant held up passing cars along a mountain road to check them for food.
Footage shows the lone jumbo blocking the road and running its trunk around the stopped sedans and pickup trucks to search for anything edible.
The animal seemed to let the drivers pass through after sniffing around for its lunch in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, Thailand, on October 2.
Some of the vehicles, however, retreated and tried another route to avoid an encounter with the tusker.
As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
