Waltham Forest Council has received backlash online after they claimed they lit up their town hall green and red for Black History Month rather than in solidarity with Palestine.

The London council tweeted on October 12: "Reports that Waltham Forest Town Hall was illuminated to represent the colours of the Palestinian flag are inaccurate. October is Black History Month and to celebrate the council is hosting a range of events for the community."

Members online are disputing the council's claim. One user said: "No sorry, the reports are entirely accurate. I’ve seen clean footage and there’s no yellow, just the Palestinian flag colours."

"Bull****. If you were illuminating for Black History Month where is the Yellow?" another posted.

Councillor for Chingford Green Ward in Waltham Forest, Mitchell Goldie, tweeted: "Shameful you still haven’t illuminated the Town Hall in solidarity with Israel despite members of the community and councillors asking."

Footage from October 9 shows the town hall lit up in green and red and supposedly yellow, the council claims.
