Australian Tawny Frogmouths, (Podargus strigoides brevipes) - supreme masters of camouflage, are nocturnal birds related to Nightjars. They are active at night, sallying from perches to capture a wide range of invertebrate and small vertebrate prey. This male and two female Tawny Frogmouths are part of a trio that has nested in Flooded Gums (Eucalyptus rudis) on the edge of Herdsman Lake in Perth, Western Australia for years. The male sits on the nest during the day and is relieved at dusk by one of his females. The trio has successfully raised at least one chick this season. The large, nearly fledged chick wriggled out from under its father to look around with its big yellow eyes, stretch, and spread its wings.
