Flood reaches roofs as monsoon storms lash northern Thailand
Footage shows heavy flood reaching the roofs of homes as monsoon storms lashed Uttaradit province in northern Thailand on October 9.
Resident Bankanom Khunmol said it was her first time experiencing such severe flooding.
Villages were hammered by torrential rain that sparked the evacuation of hundreds of residents in the Fak Tha district of Uttaradit province on October 9.
Authorities said forest runoff had rushed toward houses, with the overflowing Nan River also contributing to the floods.
More than 1,300 households were affected by the flooding in the Fak Tha district alone, which saw waters rise to up to 14 feet high, officials said.
The Uttaradit Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office said it was surveying the stricken areas to provide disaster relief.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said that a monsoon trough was prevailing across the north and the lower northeast of the country.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
Bangkok and large parts of the north and northeast of the country have been swamped with flash floods from tropical thunderstorms.
