This is the horrifying moment a woman was left screaming when she was bitten in the face while stroking a dog.

The shocking incident occurred when the woman and her young daughter stopped to stroke the dog on the street in Yancheng's Binhai County, in the coastal Chinese province of Jiangsu on October 4.

Surveillance footage shows the woman carrying an umbrella and accompanied by the child as they approached the unleashed pet dog.

She crouched down and began petting the dog, while the child also reached out to touch it, but then the dog suddenly lunged and bit the woman's face.

The woman instantly fell to the ground as the dog continued to maul her until a man intervened and chased the dog away. The woman who suffered facial injuries was left lying in a pool of blood and was given towels by locals to wipe away the blood.

The owner of the pet dog claimed that it is usually well-behaved and does not bite people. They argued that the woman provoked the dog.

However, the animal's owners also expressed willingness to compensate for any financial losses caused by her medical treatment. One merchant who witnessed the incident told local media that the dog seemed to have been punished after the incident, but they were not aware of the specific details.

Authorities from the Binhai County Police Department confirmed that they are currently investigating the attack.

Mr. Zhou Wei, director of the Jiangsu Provincial Zoological Society, also warned people not to stroke dogs that they are not familiar with.

He said: '"The video is not very clear, it was taken from the back, and it looks like a Chow Chow hybrid.

"The dog owner clearly failed to fulfil their responsibilities in training the dog and left it without a leash or muzzle, where the dog could easily lose control.

"From the victim's perspective, strange dogs should not be stroked, especially when there are no owners around, as the dogs themselves are then nervous and more of a risk."

According to the regulations of Nanjing City, the Chow Chow is a restricted dog in the main urban area.

A policeman added: "If this kind of dog is not well-educated or the owner is negligent in raising it, it is more likely that it will start to exhibit aggressive tendencies.'"
