An American man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing three foreign tourists while high on cannabis in Thailand.

Brian Andrew Burggraf, 28, from Florida, had reportedly gone on a rampage after smoking spliffs at a bar in Chiang Mai province on October 11.

The unnamed bar owner said she saw Brian pacing restlessly and causing a disturbance outside the establishment at around 6 pm. But when she went to confront him, he brandished a 15cm folding knife and lunged at her.

The attack was blocked by a Norwegian customer, who was allegedly stabbed in the stomach and had to be rushed to a hospital.

Bizarrely, Brian was able to 'walk away indifferently' from the scene but is said to have terrorised more tourists in another unprovoked attack caught on security footage later that evening.

Shocking video shows the American man appearing to plunge the blade into the back of Dutch tourist Erik Jan, 52, before running away. Erik, his son Colin Mike, 20, and other tourists were seen sprinting after him.

Police Colonel Phuwanat Duangdee, superintendent of the Chiang Mai Police Station, said police responded to the incident and arrested Brian near a hotel in Chiang Mai City. They said he had allegedly consumed cannabis before carrying out the attacks.

Erik Jan and Colin Mike were transported to a hospital to have their wounds treated. They were in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, Brian was taken to the police station for questioning, where he reportedly admitted to the stabbing. Officers said he will be charged with intentionally assaulting another person causing serious injuries.

The bar owner said: 'I am pleased the police have arrested him. He should be deported from the country and placed on a list of dangerous persons and barred from further entry into Thailand.'

She added that Brian had been allegedly been living in a cheap hotel in Chiang Mai and reportedly had violent tendencies when he was drunk.

He was remanded in police custody pending prosecution.
